Destination weddings are incredibly expensive. Not only that, but they are a total hassle to plan and execute. In fact, I would really advise against them. Unfortunately, I am speaking from experience as my own wedding is set to be in a different country. I didn't have too much choice; me and my fiance's families are all scattered across the globe like Infinity Stones, so no matter where we chose to go through with the ceremony, it would always end up feeling a bit like a destination wedding in terms of coordination and expenses. 

To make things a smidge easier, my fiance and I ended up choosing a location that is a bit closer to my mom's side of the family. At the very least, they know the area and could even recommend venues and wedding planners. Below, you'll read a tale about a woman who had the same idea; part of her family lives in Puerto Rico, so she chose it as her destination wedding. Still, the total cost was over 22 grand just for it to get cancelled over petty drama, and her dad ended up footing the bill. That's why he's not as eager to attend her second attempt at matrimony with the same guy.
